A Quick Breathing Technique for Overwhelm

A Quick Breathing Technique for Overwhelm

Sometimes the fastest way back to yourself is through your breath.

When everything feels like too much — the noise, the list, the pressure — your nervous system needs a signal that it's safe to slow down. This simple technique takes less than two minutes and you can do it anywhere.

Try This: Box Breathing

Box breathing is used by everyone from therapists to Navy SEALs because it works. Here's how:

  1. Inhale slowly for 4 counts
  2. Hold for 4 counts
  3. Exhale slowly for 4 counts
  4. Hold for 4 counts

Repeat 3–4 times. That's it.

Why It Works

When you extend your exhale and pause your breath, you activate your parasympathetic nervous system — the part of you that knows how to rest. Your heart rate slows. Your shoulders drop. The fog starts to lift.

Begin Your Morning with Calm

Let your morning routine begin with calm, before checking your phone, turning on the news, or reading emails and texts. Give yourself a quiet moment to breathe and set an intention for the day:

“No matter where I am, no matter what I am doing, and no matter who I am with, let my dominant intention be peace.”

Let your first warm drink be a gentle reminder: pause, breathe, and begin again.

A Gentle Reminder

You don't have to earn your calm. It's already in you — sometimes it just needs an invitation.

You've got this.
